Hmm... maybe next con some people should show geek TV shows too? I'd love to watch Star Trek (Voyager, TNG or DS:9 plz) or Invader Zim or something at the con. Or perhaps some anime?

Since when did a Hacker Con turn into a Sci-Fi Con?

Are you saying Spock, Scotty, Data and 7 of 9 aren't hackers?

Since when did a Hacker Con turn into a Sci-Fi Con?

There's often times people who just set up a projector and project. They could do Sci-Fi.

2nd, I could say on that same note "How is The Prisoner hacker related?" It's all the same.

Yes, it's a hacker con, but I also see it as a geek con. And many, many hackers like Star Trek and Invader Zim and stuff. Why does everyone always have to keep such a narrow focus? One thing I like about HOPE (vs. Shmoocon) is that their focus isn't as narrow... they understand that it's all related and most of us like other things besides computer security. So why NOT cater to the geek audience and show them something they might enjoy?

And, like I said above, it doesn't have to be an official con thing. It can be one person with a projector and a computer.

Re: All night activities / caffiene / great talks / etc.

The prisoner was not a sci-fi theme.  The prisoner was a political theme.  Your a prisoner, your trying to escape the prison that your government threw you into because you disagreed with they way they do things. so to silence you they lock you up and throw away the key.  Much like what they did to the demonstrators dring the 2004 RNC, they didnt like what they were doing people protested and the government rounded them up and threw them into jail.  HOPE was also about Hacktivism last time and the time before that. (Big Brother).  I am not against Sci-fi but I just don't want to see HOPE turning into another ICON

One might say a geek insisting that Star Trek and Invader Zim be watched during a hacker conference is the narrow focus. How about something not everyone has had a chance to see?

One person having a projector showing geek shows, etc, and it would turn into I-Con? If you don't want to watch it, you don't have to.

I'm all open to ideas. Were you thinking of anything in specific?

Re: All night activities / caffiene / great talks / etc.

Nothing specific.

There are a lot of short films generated every year. We could hold a hacker shorts festival during late night. Just do a call for entries a few months before the conference. Find 5-10 volunteers to divide up watching the submissions, every submission gets watched and rated by three or four people, then everyone watches the highest rated shorst and there is another rating from each volunteer. The best shorts get screened during a two hour block starting at midnight on Friday or Saturday, maybe in one of the bars.

*shrug*

Lots of options for interesting content. Only issue is filtering it down a bit, you don't want to show 6 hours of video that's 70% mediocre or just bad, better to show one or two hours with a punch.

What was I talking about?

Re: All night activities / caffiene / great talks / etc.

Amazing, we cant get volunteers for NOC, or Security but we can get them to watch films.

Well, they wouldn't have to volunteer to do it during the event, it would be one of those on your own time in the months before the conference things.

I'd volunteer to help with security. I just didn't know you were looking.

Let me know who I need to talk to.

That actually sounds really cool. I'd totally watch that, and I'm not an indy film fan.

Re: All night activities / caffiene / great talks / etc.

We would need to set up a criteria for our opinions, and a rating system.  Lets adopt the MPAA standard!

Yes, E knows all about it.  He tried to get on the review board once.

Re: All night activities / caffiene / great talks / etc.

Jack Valenti for keynote. We won't let him talk, just have a guillotine set up on the stage.

Ok, that sounds really dark, sorry.

But, um, yeah, it would not be too hard to organize a brief late night shorts festival, as long as we get it prepared well in advance.

I nominate Lex to head that project up.  Any one second it?
