So far I've been able to find some pretty good deals via Southwest Airlines (http://www.southwest.com/).
A couple of examples, based on a July 17 arrival and a July 20 or 21 departure:
Chicago: $59 each way
Cleveland: ~$100 each way
Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa Bay or West Palm Beach: ~$100 each way
Washington DC/Baltimore: $60 each way
Southwest flies into Islip Macarthur airport. From there you take a five minute shuttle ride to the train station, catch a one hour train into Penn Station, and walk across the street to Hotel Pennsylvania.
Please share any good fares you may have seen on longer hauls. The best I've found so far from the Bay Area to JFK is about $150 each way on Delta/U.S. Airways. We should be able to beat that.

When I bought my tickets I searched using all 4 airports in the NYC area. LGA was the overall cheapest to fly into, per what I was searching for. I ending up getting a round trip, non stop either direction, for $262 with American Airlines. (that being $131 each way) That's including me being picky on times and dates.
If you are open to whatever times and dates, you should be able to get somewhat cheaper. Also, if you are buying the tickets online, look for the sites that waive and/or don't charge fees if you purchase through the site. I found the same flight, I bought, on other sites that you still were charged extra fees and it was another $20-$30. I suggest looking for the sites that waive some fees.

Spirit Airlines has a lot of cheap flights, I got a round trip direct flight from Myrtle Beach to NYC for $190.

Wow, that DC-NYC fare is cheaper than Amtrak. Dang. Makes me wish I had the money for it.

If you order way in advanced you get the best prices

If you are considering between Amtrak and flying, remember Amtrak goes to Penn Station. You will have a large taxi bill or have to deal with luggage on a subway. Then add that into the cost.

Yeah, to come in from LaGuardia in a cab is $45, I think.
If you arrive on Amtrak, the hotel is across the street.

I'm taking the bus, but taking public transit from the airport is a little time consuming, but isn't that bad. Suitcases on NYC subways suck, though, because of all the stairs. (I'm a Washingtonian and I'm used to elevators at every station and escalators.)

Emmanuel, Just out of curiosity...why did you base your examples on the date July 17th? The con starts on the 16th, right?
Also, it would help me plan my travel to know what time of day HOPE starts/ends. I know the schedule hasn't been completed, but do you have an idea based off previous HOPEs(This will be my first HOPE and I have no clue how it usually works out). Wondering if I need to plan on getting to NYC early in the day on the 16th, or if I could arrive later in the afternoon and not miss anything. Also would be very helpful to know what time you think it would be over on the 18th.
If you could give me any idea on the start/end times, it would be very helpful, and much appreciated!
Thanks for making HOPE happen. I can't wait!!

Many subway stations in NYC do have elevators. If that's an issue. I'd look ahead of time what stations I'd likely need to pass through to get to & from the airport (if you're not doing Amtrak). You can find out if a station is accessible via mta.info. ![]()

I know this goes without saying, but if you're planning on flying in, get your tickets as soon as possible.
I delayed buying my tickets from Chicago, a mistake that cost me an extra $30 roundtrip.

Just a couple general notes about airfare I haven't seen mentioned and might be useful for the FAQ:
1) rather than searching JFK/EWR(newark)/LGA individually, on most sites you can use the metro IATA code NYC which covers all of those plus Westchester/White PLaines (HPN). Similar setups exist for many cities a whole list can be found here: http://wikitravel.org/en/Metropolitan_A … port_Codes
2) Most major travel sites use ITA as a backend, you can pretty much access the same thing at matrix.itasoftware.com. Although you cannot book from there it allows a closer to command line influence on the results. It however does not include Southwest. You will never find Southwest results on a non-southwest site making it slightly harder to compare them (a nice little piece of social engineering).
3)There are a lot of other ways to knock some money off of airfares ranging from relatively straightforward (sales/matching/etc.) to complex (dead leg ticketing) With a little research you can generally save a little money. I would suggest poking around www.flyertalk.com for some FAQs and initial direction.
