All night activities / caffiene / great talks / etc.

A ton of stuff worked real good, but my favorites:

   - all night music videos on hacked xboxes
   - the segways
   - the caffiene purchase area
   - cDc allowed to setup in back of main area- they provided a lot of comic relief.
   - thousands of hackers swarming around three main areas
   - all the quality talks (goes without saying)  My favorites in no order: culinary hacking, project mf, tracksploit, RMS, and live social engineering

Re: All night activities / caffiene / great talks / etc.

We originally wanted to have vending machines for beverages, but there are so many problems with that (don't get me started) that we eventually found humans that would like to do it. What other kinds of beverages would be better? Can you also expand on any of the other first topics?

The music/videos were perfect for keeping me awake to hack all night in the mezzanine, however, it would have been the fan-frickin-tastic
if the videos were from the old MTV latenight show called 'AMP'.

However, beggers can't be choosers, and I myself have had a very hard time locating a lot of those vids. If anyone here knows where to find 'em, forum mail me.

Also, I really enjoyed the tall-boy various flavors of jolt. Very useful, and thoughtful, and stored good in the room fridge.

cDc was a riot, i really hit it off with those guys, and they bring a lot of culture of their own.  It's a profound testament of irony that such a group should emerge from Lubbock, TX of all places.

I'd like to know if anyone needed a jolt in the middle of the night when these guys were gone. In other words, is their presence needed around the clock?

Agreed. When they stop coming, that's when HOPE is finished IMHO.

also, a big fav of mine from the 90's was the MTV Liquid Television. those might be easier to find than AMP. heck i have all of the Aeon Flux series from Liquid Television if people were actually interested in watching that late at night.
overall tho, it was a good idea for the music/videos through the night. great place to go sit after we came back from the bars. smile

oh and YES always keep bringing back cDc. they have been a fav of mine for years now. plus they also kept me well stocked on the candy necklaces. smile

there wasn't a moment, late at night, when there wasn't a hoard of people still roaming the mezzanine. i don't know if the Jolt was "needed", but i'm sure if it was there to purchase..they would have.

The easy access to snacks was missed late at night.

Vending machines would just be asking for trouble in so many ways, it's got to be human snack vendors if anything.

Yes please, if at all possible. Their presence was indeed sorely missed.

Knowing that they were'nt going to be around, it was a simple thing to buy extra. Unfortunately, I consistently underestimated my need for push-water and I for one got tired of going out to the drug store only to find they didn't have anything good anyway. Also, if someone could be gotten to bring the Monster energy drink, that would be wicked. The jolt providers were totally awesome, what a great idea that was!

The Jolt Cans were good - cheap, decent food, like veggies or fruit would be good, too.

Oh, and to whoever brought over donuts to the FSF table, they looked yummy. RMS seemed to enjoy those.

Re: All night activities / caffiene / great talks / etc.

A little OT but did any "Hacker Videos" get played?  I sent arsney HVTV1 but I never heard if you guys actually played it or not.

And you guys and Jolt - you know it costs about £1.50 a CAN over here and you can only get it from specialist importers like cybercandy.  You can get pseudo bulk discounts, but it's still twice as much as your average drink here.  Did you have any Code Red, though?  A regular at london2600 bought one of those not that long ago and said it was awful, but I've never had it myself.  That might be an idea for a panel - classic hacker drinks.

Sorry, not really added much to the thread but just totting up another reason to kick myself for not going.

As far as I know, lots of the videos got played. I gave two hard drives filled with videos for the content server.

being a "long" time drinker of Mountain Dew, i was severly saddened when they put out Code Red. it tastes like Mountain Dew with cherry cough syrup. ick. i didn't see any Code Red selling at the con, and as hard as it was to find Mountain Dew in NYC, i'll assume it wasn't being sold.

Re: All night activities / caffiene / great talks / etc.

I don't think vending machines are that bad of an idea... provided you put it somewhere special.

Just have one machine.
Keep it immediately adjacent to the Security Desk. There was *always* one of us there, 24/7. Keeps the hijinx to a minimum if people know there's always someone there.

Maybe keep it turned off and facing the wall during the day, forcing people to use the "human machines"?

It turns out getting a vending machine is REALLY complicated, since the hotel has its own vending company, other vendors are scared of coming. Also, it's a pain in the ass to bring a machine in for 3 days.

The guys we had were really good, they were there most of the day and had lots of drinks. Unfortunately they had to leave at night. Maybe next time we can come up with some way of vending drinks from the security table like you mentioned. I can already think of a few ways of doing without losing the vending guy any money.

Re: All night activities / caffiene / great talks / etc.

I'd never seen Bawls before hope 6, and the con totally turned me on to them because the surgar free jolt is uber nasty, and the diet bawls was the only other option. So, I guess what I mean to say is that there was an upshot to there being a somewhat limited variety of drinks. What are cons for if not for trying new stuff that you might not otherwise?

Re: All night activities / caffiene / great talks / etc.

The other thing with Jolt is that for some reason Jolt's marketing people decided to change the shape of the bottle to make it incompatible with ANY vending machines. One of your sales channels is vending, but because of your stupid design you completely dissolve it. Redbull sells special mods to vending machines that allow the smaller cans to fall out correctly. This is what a vending machine renter guy told me.
