Fantastic Idea!!!!
One comment...get some power run out there so we can hook up.
And add some more hammocks if possible.

It would also be nice if you had a "no crack" rule, and I am not referring to the drug... There were some great examples of geeks who have got some back.

The hammocks were definitely welcome, but power lines would have people tripping more than they already were.
And yes, we need a "no crack" rule, or at least a nearby vat of spackle.

Perhaps we can set up a recharging corner near the hammocks. But cords running to the hammocks is asking for trouble.

What about single outlets near the hammocks and then using some gaffers tape to tape down the lines running back to a strip somewhere. That way there aren't power supply cords all over the place and instead just in each hammock.
It's a requirement at the FIRST Robotics competitions that teams keep power cords out of the way so people don't trip over them (those FIRST guys are huge on safety). My team always used gaffers tape to keep them down pretty well so no one would trip over them.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking....if you had end to end hammocks in lines, then you could run one extension with multiple outlets down the length, so that people didn't actually have to walk over them. Add gaffers tape to secure them, and it might be workable...but not at the expense of safety of course. Ah, the dream of electricity over wireless continues. ;-)

I had no problem plugging in around the hammock area.
The hammocks were moved around constantly, there is no way you would be able to keep them in line.

Agreed...just thinking aloud.

I would be good to have some hammocks in a quiet area. I some people can acutally get some rest if they want.

Had a hard time getting a hammock throughout the weekend, it would be nice to see more next time around. A larger area for the hammocks (and a quiet, or at least separated area) would be cool, too.

The hammocks weren't for sleeping. Primarily, it was a place to sit around with your laptop, but also it offered a good view of the screen. It was a nice place to sleep at night though.
Even at night it was very busy in the hammock area. I wasn;t suggesting a place for people to sleep a night just somewhere to take a quck nap if they want too.

Maybe you should tell Jim that... being that I saw him stumble out of one on Saturday or Sunday morning. It was a very funny sight.

I had to problems moving around either. Me and another person shared a power bar. Considering my room was stiffling I had to sleep on the hammocks instead.. good call. I think I would have killed someone if I didn't have that...
dead...manager...mmmmmMMmmm

I'm not up to date with FCC regulations but is it possible to have some sort of central fm transmitter in the hammock area. That way we can broadcast music or random info through it. Since it's FM most people would be able to use their mp3 players and walkmans to listen in.
Offline
We had a transmitter at the last Hope, but being the equipment was so fragile they placed it by the coat room where trained people could keep an eye on it. That and the fact that the wire running to the antenna was a finite length, and could only be run to that area. Couppled with the fact that only a FCC licensed operator could run the equipment. In order to do what you suggested they woulld have to set up a remote uplink in the hammok area, to allow the stream to go out on the FM transmitter.

I'm foggy on wtf the FCC is thinking lately, but if it's only covering an area of like 50,000 sq ft, I don't think you need a license. You could set up a computer to run a playlist of miscellaneous mp3 files fairly easily. It could also broadcast the audio for the late night movies, so it would be like in an airplane where if you want to watch the movie you need headphones.

Or we could set up a bunch of those IPOD transmitters that broadcast on an FM frequency on your car radio. Figures set up about 100 of those and it should provide a nice coverage area.

Why not just use one?
And I didn't know that there was a transmitter at the past HOPE. Where was it? Downstairs? Where's the coat room?
Also, I don't know much about radio but I think having multiple iPod transmitters will introduce the problem of having to synchronize the signal sent to all of them. If the broadcast stream is off by a bit then we'd either get interference or an echo effect (like I said before: I don't know much about radio.) 1 or 2 larger transmitters would probably be a lot easier to manage and synch up together.

I-baLL, that was a problem at the last few HOPEs, there were things going on but they weren't publicized within the conference very well, so no one knew to take advantage of them.

The Coat room was located on 18. As was the HAM transmitter, reason being is because that was the only location that had a windows within reach of the roof to run our Belden 9913 for the HAM radio.
As for why not use just one would not have nearly enough power to transmit any signal other then to a raido within a few inchs of it.

Ah, you're talking about the ham radio transmitter. That's not what I'm talking about thouh. I'm thinking of an FM transmitter broadcasting to the hammock area downstrairs. Maybe it'll be located directly in the center of the hammock area. Or maybe tht's where the antenna would be.
Offline
I know your talking about a FM, but it would have to be located in the same area, it needs to have an antenna attached to the transmitter, which needs to have the most height as possible. In FM distance=Height.
