Announcement

Welcome to the HOPE Forums, also known as talk.hope.net. Since 1994 (the year of the first HOPE conference), we've had nine conferences. This is the place to come up with ideas, make suggestions, and welcome new people.

You'll find sections on just about anything of interest to HOPE attendees. If you think something is missing start a thread in the "General Questions" forum and/or ask people about it. Thanks for participating and see you at HOPE!

Some quick questions

First, will I be out of place in HOPE? I'm only thirteen, yet I am mature.
How much cash does everyone generally bring? I know there will be a vendor area, things for sale, etc.
How long do the majority of the talks by the speakers go for?
And my final question, I read the schedule the other day, and the Featured Speaker(s), is there any specific topic they will be covering? or just generally outlining who they are, along those lines?

Thanks everyone!
Sincerely,
Conor_M

Re: Some quick questions

I can really only answer the first question, but I'm 15, and I'm going. also I know someone else who's going and is 14. I think you should be fine with the age factor (although there will undeniably be a lot of folk in their mid-20s).

Re: Some quick questions

I'm 19. I thought I would be quite young, but it looks like I'm not alone.

Re: Some quick questions

To answer your other questions, bring as much money as you want to spend. The new "Best Of 2600" book will be making its debut at the conference and we've worked hard to bring Club-Mate (a European drink popular with hackers and other caffeine-quenchers) to the conference. I believe the book will be between $30 and $40. Talks usually span 55 minutes including time for audience-asked questions. There are a couple talks longer and one 30-minute talk this year. See the details at http://alignedleft.com/hopeschedule/ and http://hope.net/talks.php. Featured speakers do not have a set topic for their talks/keynotes.

Re: Some quick questions

Your age is not likely to be a gating factor.
There are ATMs in the hotel lobby.
Keynotes (Featured Speakers) are typically like college graduation speakers. The idea is that it dosn't matter what they talk about, because the audience wants to hear it. We don't actually know what they're going to discuss.

Re: Some quick questions

Thanks for your input everyone.
I'll be sure to grab The Best of 2600 - It looks quite promising.
Thanks MarkS, I can now accurately map-out where I am going to go smile
