Ok,
I just got finished having dinner with someone from the Hotel. He said that Vornado although they have mentioned tearing down the Hotel, has not filed any demolition plans with the city and feels that the Hotel is safe way past 2011. He stated that they can not simply knock down the building because of its location over the current subway line and the building would have to be torn down brick by brick. He also mentioned that Vornado just purchased the Manhattan Mall (http://www.vno.com/press/display.phtml?id=2672) as well as the airspace above it.
He told me that there have been rumors of the Hotels demise since the 80's and they have never done anything about it. His feelings are that this is just more rumors. He also stated that the Hotel would never allow a banner to be set up inside (or any type of advertising) to save the hotel.
Again this is just his point of view, and Vornado could go ahead with this, but the consensus at the hotel is that all is safe for the long term future.

Well, I for one feel slightly more optomistic. Thanks for the dl.

Definitely good if true but we have nothing official and probably never will. A strong showing against these plans will still go a long way to fight this plan or any future ones that involve demolition.

agreed
even if they choose not to demolish it, what if they turn it into a corp building. that wouldn't be any use either. (well at least not to us) they obviously have some sort of plans to turn it into something other than the Hotel Penn.

The Hotel Pennsylvania
I have 1 question.
Has anyone contacted the New York City Landmark Preservation Commission created by the New York Landmark Preservation Act of 1965 ?
The website is
http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/html/home/home.shtml
As a Listed Building of this Commission it can not be torn down at all. It can not be modified in any way without approval by the Commission. This Commission protects several NYC Landmarks including Grand Central Terminal and the Guggenheim Museum.
This is a very powerful commission and it has saved 856 buildings,70 interiors,9 parks,52 neighborhoods with more than 15,000 buildings as Historic Districts. Developers fear this Commission and have no influence over it.

We talked about this at the latest 2600 meeting.
I would not mind at all to go for a round two. We still have the websites and I think I have a clearer understanding of how these kinds of things operate.
Oh, and at least this time we have some real names to the faceless corp that is Vornado. ![]()
